About WheelSmith
- Tools, Systems & Learning > Development Tools & Automation
Set up Unity WheelColliders without manually positioning and configuring every wheel.
WheelSmith is a Unity Editor utility designed to streamline vehicle setup by automatically creating and configuring WheelColliders from your existing wheel meshes.
Instead of manually placing WheelColliders, estimating radius values, configuring suspension, and connecting wheel visuals, WheelSmith handles the repetitive setup work for you.
It supports more than traditional four-wheel vehicles, making it useful for trucks, trailers, utility vehicles, futuristic vehicles, and anything else that uses Unity WheelColliders.
Features
- Automatically create WheelColliders from wheel meshes
- Supports unlimited wheels
- Automatically determine wheel position
- Automatically calculate wheel radius
- Add wheel meshes manually
- Automatically search for wheel meshes
- Configure wheel mass
- Configure wheel damping
- Configure suspension distance
- Configure suspension spring
- Configure suspension damper
- Configure suspension target position
- Configure forward friction
- Configure sideways friction
- X, Y, and Z visual axle support
- Update previously generated WheelColliders
- Automatically add wheel visual followers
- Preserve imported wheel orientation
- Support off-center wheel mesh pivots
- Wheel visual synchronization using WheelCollider simulation data
- Custom component inspector
- Undo and Redo support
- Scrollable and resizable Editor interface
- No third-party dependencies
Unlimited Wheel Configurations
WheelSmith is not restricted to four wheels.
Use it for:
- Cars
- Trucks
- Semi trucks
- Trailers
- Forklifts
- Construction vehicles
- Six-wheel vehicles
- Eight-wheel vehicles
- Military-style vehicles
- Sci-fi vehicles
- Custom vehicle configurations
Add as many wheels as your vehicle requires.
Automatic Visual Synchronization
WheelSmith includes a lightweight runtime Wheel Visual Follower component.
Wheel meshes can automatically follow the simulated WheelCollider position and rotation, including:
- Suspension movement
- Steering
- Wheel rotation
- Ground contact
This removes the need to write your own basic WheelCollider visual synchronization script.
Simple Workflow
1. Select your vehicle.
2. Add or automatically locate its wheel meshes.
3. Configure the desired WheelCollider settings.
4. Generate the WheelColliders.
5. Start building your vehicle controller.
WheelSmith does not replace your vehicle physics or driving controller. Instead, it handles the repetitive WheelCollider setup required before those systems can be used.
Compatibility
Designed for modern Unity versions, including Unity 6.
No external vehicle framework or third-party package is required.
