About On-Screen Keyboard Toolkit 2027
- Art & Visuals > UI & GUI
Every key is a button, and every press tells you exactly which key it was. Lay them out as a keyboard and type into any text field. Lay them out as a keypad and open a vault. Lay them out as glowing glyphs on a wall in your 3D world and let the player spell out a summoning. Same tool, whatever the interface looks like.
Pick a ready made layout or design your own in the Inspector, with your own art for the keys. Press a key and it can type into a field, send an event, or call your code. Mouse, touch and gamepad all work.
✅ Keyboards, number pads, phone dialers, puzzle panels, terminals and anything made of keys ✅ Works in a 2D screen UI or on objects in your 3D world ✅ Every press sends an event, so a key can do anything your game wants ✅ Types into text fields like a normal keyboard when you want it to ✅ Ready made layouts: QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ, Dvorak, keypad, phone and symbols ✅ Any language or symbol set, with Korean and Japanese input included ✅ Mouse, touch and gamepad ✅ Documented, tested, with an example scene
WHAT YOU CAN BUILD:
- A keyboard for console, mobile and kiosk games where there is no physical one
- A keypad for door codes, safes, ATMs and lock puzzles
- An alien computer console or a retro terminal, with whatever glyphs and art you like
- A runic or demonic interface where each key is a symbol and a sequence casts a spell
- A musical or rhythm pad where each key is a note or an action
- A chat or name entry screen that types into a normal text field
HOW IT WORKS:
- Design: Choose a layout or edit your own, with any size, label and art for each key. Switch layout while the game runs, for a language switch or a shift to symbols.
- React: Every press raises an event with the key that was pressed. Listen for it and do whatever you like, or leave it to type.
- Type: Send the keys into the selected text field, a field you choose, or any text in your own scripts.
- Compose: The Ligature Library turns key sequences into the characters you want. Type romaji for Japanese, jamo for Korean, or (c) for ©.
WHAT'S NEW:
- Phone style Shift: Tap once for the next letter, twice to lock, a third time to turn off. AltGr works the same way.
- Layouts as assets: A keyboard is now one asset you can edit, copy, import and export as JSON, and swap at run time.
- Auto show: The keyboard appears when a text field is selected and goes away when you submit.
- More keys: Enter, Tab, arrows, Home, End, Clear and Hide.
- Korean and Japanese: Proper syllable building for Korean and full Katakana typing.
- Better gamepad and touch handling, key repeat, and exact text editing.
- New editor tools for the keyboard, layouts and ligatures.
- Documented and tested, with an AI-agent SKILL guide in the package.
- Many fixes. Existing keyboards still load.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Unity 6.0 or newer
- Unity UI with TextMeshPro
- The free Heathen Game Framework, which Heathen Toolbox installs for you
