About Rapid Placement

  • Tools, Systems & Learning > Development Tools & Automation
  • Tools, Systems & Learning > Level & World Building
Building out a scene in Unity means a lot of drag, switch to Move, nudge, switch to Rotate, nudge again, switch to Scale, fix the position you just threw off; for every single object. Rapid Placement gets rid of the switching. Grab an object, and rotate and scale it right there mid-drag with R and S, then drop it. One motion, start to finish.

It also actually understands surfaces. Drop a lamp on a table and it rests on the table. Push a shelf against a wall and it sits flush against the wall instead of poking through it, same tool, same keys, it just figures out which side of the object should be touching based on where you're aiming it. And it works whether or not your objects even have colliders, it can read the raw mesh directly if that's how your scene's built.

There are four ways to use it, depending on what you're doing:
- Create - drag a prefab in from the asset browser and place it directly in the scene.
- Duplicate - click any object already in your scene to clone it (if it's a prefab, the clone stays linked to the prefab, it's not just a disconnected copy).
- Instantiate - click a prefab once to arm it, then click around the scene to stamp down copies with randomized rotation and scale each time, using ranges you set yourself. Good for scattering rocks, foliage, clutter, whatever needs variation without you rotating each one by hand.
- Grab - click and drag anything already in your scene to reposition it, with the same surface-snapping and rotate/scale controls.

The asset browser has a search box, adjustable grid size, and you can point it at any folder either by typing the path or just dragging the folder in from the Project window.

Everything runs through Unity's normal Undo system, so Ctrl+Z works exactly like you'd expect at every step.

Features:
- Create, Duplicate, Instantiate, and Grab modes
- Surface snapping that works with physics colliders or raw mesh geometry, no collider required
- Automatic clipping prevention — snaps whichever face of the object is actually facing the surface, not just "the bottom"
- Rotate and scale live during placement, no mode switching, no separate tool selection
- Optional "align to surface" so rotation follows the surface normal (a picture frame going flat on a wall vs. upright on a shelf)
- Randomized rotation/scale ranges for Instantiate mode, with adjustable min/max
- Prefab-aware duplication — clones stay connected to their source prefab
- Folder search and drag-and-drop folder assignment in the asset browser
- Adjustable rotation and scale sensitivity
- Full Undo/Redo support
