KHS – Ongnyucheon, Changdeokgung Palace,오류천

Ongnyucheon Stream, meaning "crystal-clear jade stream," is located northmost area of Changdeokgung Palace, in the deepest valley.

In 1636 (the 14th year of King Injo), Soyoam Rock, which was a large rock, was carved to create swirling water for an artificial waterfall. According to Gunggwolji (Records of Royal Palaces), the three characters (玉流川) carved on the rock are the handwriting of King Injo, and the poetry was written by King Sukjong himself, the 19th king of Joseon praising the surrounding scenery.

Around the stream stand many small pavilions—namely Soyojeong, Taegeukjeong, Nongsanjeong, Chwihanjeong, and Cheonguijeong—completing a scenery that emphasizes various sections of the garden. Cheonguijeong Pavilion was surrounded by a small rice paddy and a thatch-roofed pavilion, the only one of its kind in all of the buildings in Korea.
