About Animation Graph

  • Tools, Systems & Learning > Development Tools & Automation
Animation Graph is a visual, node-based animation editor for Unity that replaces and extends the classic Animator workflow. It gives developers one clear graph canvas to build, connect and control the full animation logic of a character or gameplay system.

With Animation Graph, clips, blend trees, state machines, layers and transitions are placed side by side in a readable visual structure. Instead of working with hidden states, scattered Animator layers or deeply nested inspector fields, you can see how animations flow from one node to the next.

The package supports state machines, 1D and 2D blend trees, any-state transitions, exit-time transitions, interruptible blends, nested state machines and parameter-based conditions using float, int and bool values. This makes it suitable for both simple animation setups and advanced character controllers.

Animation Graph also includes live preview tools, allowing you to scrub, play and debug your graph directly inside the editor. Active nodes and blend weights can be inspected in real time, making animation behavior easier to understand and refine.

For production use, Animation Graph is built around a custom Burst-compiled runtime with allocation-free evaluation and job-system parallelism. This helps large projects scale better, especially when working with complex rigs, many clips or multiple animated characters.

Developers can also control the system fully from C#. Parameters, transitions and node states can be driven by gameplay logic, making the tool flexible for procedural animation, combat systems, locomotion, interaction systems and custom runtime behavior.

Requirements and Dependencies
Requires Unity 2022.3 LTS or newer (.NET Standard 2.1 scripting compatibility).
Depends on the official Unity packages:
- Burst (com.unity.burst)
- Collections (com.unity.collections)
- Mathematics (com.unity.mathematics)

These packages are declared as dependencies and are installed automatically by the Unity Package Manager. The animation system is render pipeline independent and works with the Built-in Render Pipeline, URP and HDRP. The included demo scene ships with its own shaders and materials. Animation Graph works with standard Unity AnimationClips and requires no third-party animation assets or tools. Runtime code is included as full C# source. Editor tooling is provided as a precompiled, editor-only DLL. The package also includes a complete demo scene featuring a playable character, animations, environment and full documentation.

Key Features
- Visual node-based animation workflow
- State machines and nested state machines
- 1D and 2D blend trees
- Any-state and exit-time transitions
- Interruptible animation blending
- Layering with override and additive blend modes
- Bone masks for per-bone blending
- Live preview and debugging inside the editor
- Real-time active node highlighting
- Full C# API control
- Burst-compiled runtime
- Allocation-free evaluation
- Job System parallelism
- Designed for scalable production animation systems

Why Animation Graph?
Animation Graph is made for Unity developers who want more control, better visibility and stronger performance than the default Animator. It keeps the workflow visual and designer-friendly while still giving programmers the flexibility required for complex gameplay-driven animation systems.
